The unexpected white on black stopped him in his tracks. Hands on knees, he tried to catch his breath, while sweat dripped down his face. It was a fresh piece of paper, caught in the thistle thorns that grew near the running trail. Curious, he picked up the letter and unfolded it. All of a sudden the words danced before his eyes and he jerked upright. In the distance, near the edge, he could see the flashing lights of a police car. His gaze swept over the words again and slowly he turned the letter around. ‘To Carmen’, it said.
A variation:
A soft click
the door closed
On the table a letter
‘BRB’
She waited for years
in vain
I wrote this for Writing 101: Be Brief: “You stumble upon a random letter on the path. You read it. It affects you deeply, and you wish it could be returned to the person to which it’s addressed. Write a story about this encounter. Today’s twist: Approach this post in as few words as possible.”
I’d love to get feedback!
The Six Word Story Challenge of this week is all about DILEMMAS.
A dilemma (Greek: δί-λημμα “double proposition”) is a problem offering two possibilities, neither of which is practically acceptable. One in this position has been traditionally described as Being on the horns of a dilemma, neither horn being comfortable. This is sometimes more colorfully described as Finding oneself impaled upon the horns of a dilemma, referring to the sharp points of a bull’s horns, equally uncomfortable (and dangerous).
The challenge for you:
Write a story about a DILEMMA in just six words. Let a photo or image inspire you to write a story. Or first write the story, and then make or search for a picture to go with it.
Here’s a Six Word Story by Ernest Hemingway.
Such an impact and unseen images in only six words…

I look forward to your stories.

To keep our thirsty brains occupied, we often take up the challenge of puzzles. There are all kinds of puzzles: logic puzzles, mathematical and mechanical puzzles, paper and picture, word and game puzzles, and many more.
A puzzle is a problem or game that tests the ingenuity of the solver. In a basic puzzle, one is intended to put together pieces in a logical way in order to come up with the desired solution. Puzzles are often contrived as a form of entertainment, but they can also stem from serious mathematical or logistical problems — in such cases, their successful resolution can be a significant contribution to mathematical research.
Solutions to puzzles may require recognizing patterns and creating a particular order. People with a high inductive reasoning aptitude may be better at solving these puzzles than others. Puzzles based on the process of inquiry and discovery to complete may be solved faster by those with good deduction skills.
The challenge for you:
Write a story about PUZZLES in just six words. Or let the story be the PUZZLE! Let a photo or image inspire you to write a story. Or first write the story, and then make or search for a picture to go with it.

This week, the Six Word Story Challenge – 6WSC – is all about FOOD.
Food is any substance consumed to provide nutritional support for the body. It is usually of plant or animal origin, and contains essential nutrients, such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, or minerals. The substance is ingested by an organism and assimilated by the organism’s cells in an effort to produce energy, maintain life, or stimulate growth.
Historically, people secured food through two methods: hunting and gathering, and agriculture. Today, most of the food energy consumed by the world population is supplied by the food industry.
And food, eating, can be so much fun. There must be lots of stories to tell.
The challenge for you:
Write a story about FOOD in just six words. Let a photo or image inspire you to write a story. Or first write the story, and then make or search for a picture to go with it.

A lighter subject this time! 🙂 Plus a couple of quotes for inspiration:
Youth is wasted on the young.
– George Bernard ShawYouth is easily deceived because it is quick to hope.
– AristotleForty is the old age of youth; fifty the youth of old age.
– Victor HugoYouth is when you’re allowed to stay up late on New Year’s Eve. Middle age is when you’re forced to.
– Bill VaughanWhat Youth deemed crystal, Age finds out was dew.
– Robert BrowningIn youth we run into difficulties. In old age difficulties run into us.
– Beverly Sills
Youth is the time of life when one is young, but often means the time between childhood and adulthood (maturity). Definitions of the specific age range that constitutes youth vary. An individual’s actual maturity may not correspond to their chronological age, as immature individuals can exist at all ages. Youth is also defined as the appearance, freshness, vigor, spirit, etc., characteristic of one who is young.
The challenge for you:
Write a story about YOUTH in just six words. Let a photo or image inspire you to write a story. Or first write the story, and then make or search for a picture to go with it.
