Travel theme: Architecture

For this photo challenge I decided to step back in time and post pictures of the past, which I shot these past weeks in the USA – in honor of the Native Americans. Their ability to live in harmony with nature was impressive and admirable. They can teach us a LOT.

Architecture

My entry this week is a photo of the beautiful ‘Huize Damiaan’, a former monastery in the south of Limburg, the Netherlands. In this region my roots are still firmly grounded, though I live 100 miles to the north-west. Yeah, long roots, right? 😉

The foundations of ‘Huize Damiaan’ were built on the grounds of a little farm. In 1896 the construction work of the monastery started, only to finish in 1927. Up until 1991 it has been used for religious purposes, but in that year it was sold into private hands. Since then the building has been exploited in a commercial way to preserve the monastery for the generations to come – only in that way the maintenance costs can be covered.
