Six Word Story Challenge: Puzzle

To keep our thirsty brains occupied, we often take up the challenge of puzzles. There are all kinds of puzzles: logic puzzles, mathematical and mechanical puzzles, paper and picture, word and game puzzles, and many more.

A puzzle is a problem or game that tests the ingenuity of the solver. In a basic puzzle, one is intended to put together pieces in a logical way in order to come up with the desired solution. Puzzles are often contrived as a form of entertainment, but they can also stem from serious mathematical or logistical problems — in such cases, their successful resolution can be a significant contribution to mathematical research.

Solutions to puzzles may require recognizing patterns and creating a particular order. People with a high inductive reasoning aptitude may be better at solving these puzzles than others. Puzzles based on the process of inquiry and discovery to complete may be solved faster by those with good deduction skills.

Six Word Story Challenge: Food

This week, the Six Word Story Challenge – 6WSC – is all about FOOD.

Food is any substance consumed to provide nutritional support for the body. It is usually of plant or animal origin, and contains essential nutrients, such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, or minerals. The substance is ingested by an organism and assimilated by the organism’s cells in an effort to produce energy, maintain life, or stimulate growth.

Historically, people secured food through two methods: hunting and gathering, and agriculture. Today, most of the food energy consumed by the world population is supplied by the food industry.

And food, eating, can be so much fun. There must be lots of stories to tell.

Six Word Story Challenge: Art

This week, the Six Word Story Challenge – 6WSC – is all about ART.

Art is a diverse range of human activities and the products of those activities. In this post we focus on the visual arts, which includes the creation of images or objects in fields including painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and other visual media.

Art may be characterized in terms of mimesis (its reflection of life), expression, communication of emotion, or other qualities. During the Romantic period, art came to be seen as “a special faculty of the human mind to be classified with religion and science”. Though the definition of what constitutes art is disputed and has changed over time, general descriptions mention an idea of imaginative or technical skill stemming from human agency and creation.

The nature of art, and related concepts such as creativity and interpretation, are explored in a branch of philosophy known as aesthetics.

Six Word Story Challenge: Film

This week, the Six Word Story Challenge – 6WSC – is all about FILM.

A film, also called a movie or motion picture, is a series of still images which, when shown on a screen, creates the illusion of moving images. A film is created by photographing actual scenes with a motion picture camera; by photographing drawings or miniature models using traditional animation techniques; by means of CGI and computer animation; or by a combination of some or all of these techniques and other visual effects. Contemporary definition of cinema is the art of simulating experiences, that communicate ideas, stories, perceptions, feelings, beauty or atmosphere by the means of recorded or programmed moving images along with other sensory stimulation.

Six Word Story Challenge: Dialect

Which do you prefer: British English, American English or a juicy dialect? Upper class language or rolling syllables in a relaxed and lingering way? And why? What does speaking a dialect mean to you? How does it make you feel?

This week, the Six Word Story Challenge – 6WSC – is all about dialect.

The term dialect is used in two distinct ways, even by linguists. One usage refers to a variety of a language that is a characteristic of a particular group of the language’s speakers. The term is applied most often to regional speech patterns, but a dialect may also be defined by other factors, such as social class.

The other usage refers to a language that is socially subordinate to a regional or national standard language, often historically cognate to the standard, but not a variety of it or in any other sense derived from it.

A dialect is distinguished by its vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. Where a distinction can be made only in terms of pronunciation, the term accent is appropriate, not dialect.

The challenge for you:

Write a story about/in DIALECT in just six words. Let a photo or image inspire you to write a story. Or first write the story, and then make or search for a picture to go with it.

Six Word Story Challenge: Youth

A lighter subject this time! 🙂 Plus a couple of quotes for inspiration:

Youth is wasted on the young.
– George Bernard Shaw

Youth is easily deceived because it is quick to hope.
– Aristotle

Forty is the old age of youth; fifty the youth of old age.
– Victor Hugo

Youth is when you’re allowed to stay up late on New Year’s Eve. Middle age is when you’re forced to.
– Bill Vaughan

What Youth deemed crystal, Age finds out was dew.
– Robert Browning

In youth we run into difficulties. In old age difficulties run into us.
– Beverly Sills

130925jeugd2

Youth is the time of life when one is young, but often means the time between childhood and adulthood (maturity). Definitions of the specific age range that constitutes youth vary. An individual’s actual maturity may not correspond to their chronological age, as immature individuals can exist at all ages. Youth is also defined as the appearance, freshness, vigor, spirit, etc., characteristic of one who is young.

The challenge for you:

Write a story about YOUTH in just six words. Let a photo or image inspire you to write a story. Or first write the story, and then make or search for a picture to go with it.
