The Gilded TRUMPet

Once upon a time, there was a Gilded TRUMPet, carefully polished to an artificial shine. A shine that was a bit too bright to be real. His whole life he had longed for a pedestal. As a wind instrument, he had always been taken by the hand, but now he wanted to stand on his feet. People tend to look up to you just a bit easier when you’re on top.

He watched the real Golden Trumpet parade, and its beautiful, authentic luster racked his eyes. He wanted to be like him! He blew and blew, his TRUMPet mouth much larger than the others. The noise rose, swelled and drowned out the collective melody completely. Soon other instruments were impressed, tone deaf as they were. They did not know it was not real gold that glittered. Johan Cruijff lives on

Sadly, Dutch football legend JOHAN CRUIJFF, number 14, has passed away. On Thursday 24 March 2016, he lost his fight to cancer.

Football career

Johan Cruijff was a Dutch professional football player and coach. As a player he won the Ballon d’Or three times, in 1971, 1973 and 1974. Cruyff was one of the most famous exponents of the football philosophy known as Total Football explored by Rinus Michels, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in football history. In the 1970s, Dutch football rose from near obscurity to become a powerhouse in the sport. Cruyff led the Netherlands to the final of the 1974 FIFA World Cup and received the Golden Ball as player of the tournament.

At club level, Cruyff started his career at Ajax where he won eight Eredivisie titles, three European Cups and one Intercontinental Cup. In 1973 he moved to FC Barcelona for a world record transfer fee, winning La Liga in his first season and was named European Footballer of the Year. After retiring from playing in 1984, Cruyff became highly successful as manager of Ajax and later FC Barcelona; he remained an influential advisor to both clubs.

In 1999, Cruyff was voted European Player of the Century in an election held by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics, and came second behind Pelé in their World Player of the Century poll

Statements

A couple of his -often inimitable- statements:

  • If we have the ball, they can’t score.
  • Each disadvantage has its advantage.
  • Before I make a mistake, I won’t make that mistake.
  • The Italians can’t beat us, but we can lose against them.
  • You have to shoot, or you can’t score.
  • Coincidence is logical.
  • Soccer is simple, but it is difficult to play simple.
  • Sometimes something’s got to happen before something is going to happen.
  • Speed is often confused with insight. When I start running earlier than the others, I appear faster.
  • To win you have to score one more goal than your opponent.
  • Without the ball, you can’t win.
  • If you’re not there, you’re either too early or too late.

Rest in peace, Johan.

And though he is ‘there’ now, his spirit lives on in every child. After all, all it takes is a bit of space and a ball.

Rainbow Hues

When mind is full
But stomach empty
Mindfulness
Becomes a burden

When mind is empty
And tummy full
Mind your own business
Don’t become a burden

Don’t let contempt
Shade our world in red
Don’t let compassion and respect
Be principles of the past

Trust in yourself
Believe in others
And color through cultures
In rainbow hues

Robin left bits and parts of himself, a gift from him to us all. Impressive and unique. I care about the person he was, the wealth of feelings and emotions he gave to us by pouring all he had in his characters. He gave away so much of his emotions and happiness. Perhaps too much. Leave him and his legacy alone and honor him for who he was. A great man, actor, husband, father, friend, son and so much more. Please.

Mr. Robin Williams, rest in peace.

Doe Maar in Concert

My Saturday in six words:

DOE MAAR. GO AHEAD. NO MORE.

Doe Maar was a Dutch ska band with punk and reggae influences. Their career ran from 1978 to 1984 and they were one of the most successful pop bands in Dutch history. Doe Maar translates as Go Ahead or Just do it.

Yesterday they had their last reunion ever, playing at Tilburg in the Netherlands. And what a show it was! They played for hours. They played all of their hits – which were a LOT. And we all sang and danced along.

Watch and listen to Belle Hélène:

Is Dit Alles (Is this everything?):

Both singers are 64 years old!

Doe Maar – you are, were and will always be terrific.

News: Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands retires

For two hundred years kings and queens have reigned over the Netherlands. We have had a lot of Willems, as you can see:

Today our Queen Beatrix announced her retirement on April 30, 2013. She will step back after thirty three years, leaving the throne to her first-born son.

So finally a new king will step up to the throne – after 123 years of queens – King Willem-Alexander and his Queen Máxima.

Queen Beatrix celebrates her 75th birthday on January 31st. A very special date for me. Not because of the Queen, but because of my mother. Mom – exactly one year the Queen’s senior – will celebrate her 76th birthday this Thursday.  And to me that is more special than any Royal House happening!

Traffic Jam Record

Today it snowed in the Netherlands. Up until now the weather has been kind and mellow, but  last night and in daytime the clouds emptied many buckets of snow over parts of Holland. And our country caved in under the pressure of this white blanket.

Long traffic jams were the result: over thousand kilometers of stranded and lined up cars. An all time record! I didn’t even know we had that many roads. 😉 Trains were canceled. Planes couldn’t keep their schedule due to the snow and ice.

Amazing how society gets turned upside down by one day of snow…

Broomstick

Are you ready for something special tonight? No photo, no story or poem, but a video.

As I wrote in the Green Challenge, I had to say goodbye to my beloved green Ford Ka, nicknamed Kaatje. Yes, how original 😉 But with the help of my parents and V-man, I was able to buy this white beauty. Thank you so much!

Fasten your seat belts for a live performance of yours truly, presenting my precious new Broomstick. As you can see I’m a tad bit nervous and excited hehehe. And you can hear V-mans voice in the background.

What do you think?

‘Microsoft’ Hacking Attempt?

This morning I got one of the strangest phone calls of my life. And I’ve had a few 😉

My house phone rang, and when I looked at the number, I saw only zeroes. Weird! I answered the phone and a man in an urgent voice asked me if I was the owner of the resident. In perfect English, with an American accent. Yes, I said, why? And are you the main user of the computer in the house? Again a yes, of course. And who am I speaking to?

M’am, I’m from Microsoft in the USA and we’ve been notified through a crash report that your PC is in grave danger. I need you to start your computer and follow my directions.

A deep silence on my end of the line. What the heck? Or should I say, what the hack?!!

Eh, sir, come again?

M’am, your PC is in danger and I need you to take immediate action. Soon it will be too late and then the motherboard will be irreparably damaged. Please, go to your computer and I will show you the errors with your own eyes, and what you can do to protect it.

My eye brows were passing my hair line by that time.

I will do no such thing, it is working perfectly.

Again, I urge you to follow my directions, or else Microsoft can’t be held responsible for this, it is on your head then. Your Windows Operating System is in danger.

My temper and suspicion flared brightly.

If YOU think that I will follow orders from a unknown man from the ‘USA’ during a weird phone call, and type unknown commands into my dear computer, you must be out of your mind. Since when is Microsoft this concerned about its OVERSEAS customers? In the Netherlands?! I do NOT believe a word you say and will NOT act on your orders. Goodbye!

Yeah, ‘Microsoft man’, your service is excellent, I must say. And you scared the shit out of me. How did that man get my personal telephone number? Spooky!

Have you ever had this kind of experience? And what did you do?
