CBW: Signs in the Dutch mountains

This week the photo challenge calls out for all sorts of signs. I love the atmosphere in this photo, which I took at the Buitengoed Slavante in Maastricht. This city is located in the south-east of the Netherlands, twenty miles from where I was born. And guess what. Holland is mostly flat, but this part of our country has mountains! Well, they are hills really, but we are so proud of them that we like to tease the rest of the Dutchies with ‘our mountains’.

This week the photo challenge is about public transportation (bus, planes, trains, etc). I was in London these past days to visit the BETT education technology conference. In the evening we strolled over the Tower Bridge, where I caught this double decker bus.

Moving Water

Many a calm river begins as a turbulent waterfall, yet none hurtles and foams all the way to the sea.

— Mikhail Lermontov

For nearly a thousand years, the Dutch have been clever in dealing with the water that surrounds them. The sustainable blend of nature and technology used to keep Kinderdijk dry is so uniquely valuable that the area and its windmills were granted UNESCO World Heritage status.

You won’t find a windmill complex like Kinderdijk anywhere else in the world. The ingenious system of windmills and pumping stations have been keeping the soil dry here for centuries now, in a constant struggle between human brains and the power of the water.

May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds.
