Six Word Story Challenge: Pets

Big brown eyes look up at you, begging for attention. The whole body is shaking enthusiastically, the tail an able conductor. Next to it a hairy creature with green eyes, that stare at you with a piercing gaze. You feel a warm fur coat rub against your ankles and your heart melts – at least mine.

PETS – one adores them, the other abhors them. Some can never get enough of hugging and playing, caressing. Others get goose bumps at the thought of hair, scent, and turn away.

Stories abound by both sides. And I want to hear YOURS! 🙂

A pet (or companion animal) is an animal kept for a person’s company, as opposed to livestock, laboratory animals, working animals and sport animals which are kept for economic reasons. The most popular pets are noted for their attractive appearances and their loyal or playful personalities. Their pedigree may also be a factor.

In some cases pets may also provide their owners with benefits, such as providing companionship to elderly adults who do not have adequate social interaction with other people. While some people believe in the physical and emotional benefits of owning a pet, scientists are currently working to verify these ideas with medical studies. There is now a medically approved class of “therapy animals”, mostly dogs, that are brought to visit confined humans. Pet therapy utilizes trained animals and handlers to achieve specific physical, social, cognitive, and emotional goals with patients. Walking a dog can provide both the owner and the dog with exercise, fresh air, and social interaction.

The most popular pets are dogs and cats, but there are also rodent pets, such as gerbils, hamsters, chinchillas, fancy rats, and guinea pigs; avian pets, such as canaries, parakeets, and parrots; reptile pets, such as turtles, lizards and snakes; aquatic pets, such as tropical fish and frogs; and arthropod pets, such as tarantulas and hermit crabs.

    1. What a beautiful story you have shared with us, Col. And I can imagine you wanted to use this picture, and this alone. Terry must have been a very good friend to you, and a wonderful artist!

          1. The first was when I noticed that when I hid something in a room for him to find, he wouldn’t bother to go sniffing everywhere (I suspect that he had sub-standard smelling skills) but would sit in the centre looking round for likely places, and then go and investigate them.

              1. One could almost hear the internal dialogue – ‘Where has he put it, this time? Maybe under that cushion? No, I don’t think so. What about behind the armchair? Let’s have a look … no, not there; sit down again and have another think …’

      1. They don’t excrete. At least visibly. 😛 So no maintanence. Not ta mention their contribution to the earth’s troubles. 😉 Besides, what do you expect from someone who’s only had plants as pets? 😀

        1. Plants are very good for the environment, the earth. We would not be alive without them, Sidd 😀 But I can’t live without an animal companion either! 😛
          You should try a cat. Or a dog.

      Animals do think! People who say they don’t, don’t have pets. Where would we be without our adorable critters.
